Choosing the Right Dentist for You
Wednesday, October 3, 2018
Unless you live in an area where there is only one dental office and one dentist, you probably have choices. There may be dozens of dental offices in your area that offer general and specialized dental care. It’s important to find a dentist who meets your dental care needs and who makes you feel comfortable during appointments.
It’s tempting to select a dentist who offers a free exam and x-rays for your first visit. It’s also appealing to select a dental practice based on it’s close proximity to your home or the location in which you work. However, there is more to picking the right dentist than free offers and the location of the dentist’s office.
Here’s a list of considerations to think about:
Have you read online reviews of the dental practice? Online reviews say a lot. If the dentist you are considering has dozens of positive online reviews, that’s a good sign.
Is the dentist willing to spend a few minutes with you for a meet-and-greet? A meet-and-greet is not necessarily a lengthy visit. It’s a short meeting that helps you quickly form an opinion of the dentist.
Do you feel comfortable in the dental office? Is it warm and welcoming? A friendly and inviting atmosphere in the office makes visiting the dentist more pleasant and enjoyable.
When you ask the dentist questions, are they answered honestly and openly? You should feel that your dentist is always looking out for your best interest.
Is the dental practice in network or out of network with your dental insurance plan? If your dentist does not accept your dental insurance plan, you might have to pay out of pocket for all your dental care.
Is the dental practice affiliated with a discount dental plan? If you are a member of an affordable discount dental plan, you want to choose a dental practice that participates in the plan.
Do the dentist’s office hours work with your schedule? Some dental offices are open during evening and weekend hours. If extended hours are important to you, make sure to choose a practice that offers this.
Is the dental office open for emergency and last-minute appointments? Emergencies happen. If you want a dentist that is available on a moment’s notice, make sure to find one that welcomes this type of appointment.
Do you feel that the dentist is genuinely concerned about you and your oral health? Your dentist should be more than just a dentist. Your dentist should be a partner who wants to help you enjoy a lifetime of optimal health.
When selecting a dentist, you want to choose someone who is sincere and who helps you make smart decisions about your teeth, gums, and well-being. Your oral health has a direct impact your overall health. Therefore, it’s essential that you find a dentist who strives to help you live the healthiest life possible. It’s important to remember that an excellent dentist does much more than simply clean your teeth.
